Hospital Day 5-10

Day 5 - Surgery day!!  I woke up nervous / scared.  At 10.30am  they took me downstairs to theatre, 45mins later I was in the induction room getting various drips put in my arms and then wheeled into theatre.  Surgery was done, then next minute I'm awake with a splitting headache and feeling extremely nauseous.  I pass out again, wake up to someone in scrubs talking to me, pass out again.  Finally wake up to rexovery nurse telling me it's time to go back to my room - I tell them I'm not awake enough yet.  Get back to my room to find my mum ia slightly panicked beause I'd been gone for nearly 7 hours.  Made a quick call to Craig to reassure him that I'm ok, then go back to sleep till 10pm.

Found out that my surgery took a little longer than normal because once the started it caused a dural tear-  A watertight sac of tissue (dura mater) covers the spinal cord and the spinal nerves. A tear in this covering can occur during surgery. It is not uncommon to have a dural tear during any type of spine surgery. If noticed during the surgery, the tear is simply repaired and usually heals uneventfully.

Day 6-8- I had to spend 48 hours laying flat on my back!  I am still pretty pain feee and feeling fabulous.   Day 8 I was supposed to take my first steps, but my blood pressure dropped too low and I was dizzy.

Kristy brought me Krispy Kreme donuts!!!!

View from my room.

Day 9 - I took my first few steps across the room!!  Only a little bit of pain!  Mum filmed it for me, but there is a flaah of my bum, so wont be sharing it! :)

Found out that my friend Kylie was in the ward above me - she was being treated for a post-surgery infeection, so mum headed up to see her and say hello for me.

Day 10 -  Went for a longer walk today - all the way to tje nurse's station - physio said I have exceeded their expectations.

I hopped in a wheelchair and mum and I went upstairs to say a quick hello to Kylie before we escaped downstairs to enjoy some fresh air.

Doing my breathing exercises to increase lung capacity and reduce risk of blood clots.

Australia Day 2018

Craig and Clay decided to celebrate Australia Day with a swim at the beach.  Nanny and Poppy joined them.  It was beautiful weather and the water was perfect temp.  Clay loves the water and was confident to go out deeper and not afraid of the waves hitting him!

Clay conned Poppy into buying him an icebloack :)

How did you celebrate?

Hospital Day 1-4

Day 1-3 - I woke up with absolutely no feeling in both legs (my right leg has been numb for years, but over the last 7 weeks my left leg had been slowly getting number) and weakness when I stood, so we called an ambulance.  Lots of doctor visits, poking & prodding and MRI while trying to work out what to do.  After consulting with Brisbane hospital, it was decided I would be flown down for spinal surgery.

Mum and I taking selfies when we were bored.

Rescue chopper heli-pad was outside my room - Clay enjoyed watching it coming & going.

Flowers from Craig's work!

Day 4 - I was flown to Royal Brisbane & Women's Hospital (RBWH) on the Royal Flying Doctors Service.

Sent this pic to some family & friends - knowing my fear of flying a number of them did question if I had been drugged up! LOL

I had another MRI and the head sugeon came in to see me.  I was told I was going to have surgery the next day!!

Decompression is a surgical procedure that is performed to alleviate pain caused by pinched nerves (neural impingement).
During a lumbar decompression back surgery, a small portion of the bone over the nerve root and/or disc material from under the nerve root is removed to give the nerve root more space and provide a better healing environment.
lumbar laminectomy (open decompression) is typically performed for pain from lumbar spinal stenosis. The goal of the surgery is to allow more room for the nerve root, thus reducing pain (and potentially any leg weakness or neurological symptoms) and restoring the patient’s ability to participate in everyday activities.

Kristy visited me that afternoon and brought a box of card making supplies to keep me busy!

Everyday Moments

Playdoh fun with the cuzzies.

We brought a new packet of watetbeads - so had a play.

Hello 2018!

Unfortunately a storm put a stop to our usual NYE plans (picnic at the beach with family & friends and watching the 8pm fireworks) last night.  We were happy to wake up to gorgeous blue skies this morning!  We packed up the car and headed to the beach so that Clay could have a big ride on his new bike :)  He absolutely loved it and kept his helmet on the whole time and didnt crash into anything!

For Christmas Clay also got a balance bike from his uncle Luke & aunty Rinda as well as a scooter from Ma Ma - so looka likw there will be even more outside time happening  this year :)
